Recently, I got to do something pretty cool. It was the 2nd of December and I, as always, was running late. That Saturday morning, I was supposed to meet Seema Aunty. Mrs. Seema Singh (aka Seema Aunty) is the founder and owner of Hope for Cancer Patients (HCP) – an NGO dedicated to the service of cancer patients and their families. She is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet! However, I was still indubitably late.
Once I finally found her and she gave me a quick orientation on what I had to do, we immediately got to work. That day, HCP was holding a Breast Cancer awareness and free screening program which was mainly directed towards the female staff members of the Sobha Iris apartment. These women came from very poor socio-economic backgrounds and had never received such medical exposure before. Seema Aunty, along with 2 other women who volunteered with HCP, briefed the ladies about breast cancer. I, being a volunteer for HCP myself, decided to dedicate a couple of hours to the program. My job was fairly simple – guide the incoming women to the doctor who would examine them, assist the doctor, write down the names of the women and give them something before they left. Yes, it does sound fairly elementary. However, you must never forget that in a country with the population of over a billion, we are constantly seeing an efflux of people no matter where we are. Nevertheless, being the eccentric girl I am, I smiled at all the incoming women and being the chatty girl I am, I talked endlessly not only with them but even with the doctor!
Woman after woman after woman after… Well, you get the idea… It was a long tiring day which ended in a late scrumptious lunch and some nice chai (chai makes everything better doesn’t it?) In the end, 86 women were examined, out of which 8 were given a mammogram test as per the doctor’s advice. The mammogram was done free of cost and they received their reports a week later. Breast cancer was detected in 3/8 women. These women were followed up with by HCP.
#HonestReflectionTime
In conclusion, I got to learn a lot about breast cancer and cancer in general. Thanks a lot Seema Aunty for having me there! As Mahatma Gandhi famously once said, “The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others” and I couldn’t possibly agree more. 🙂

It’s pretty impressive to see your interest in social activities at your age when career predominates almost everything for most teenagers. But it’s good to do good for the community as the satisfaction and sense of contentment it gives is beyond words. I wish you all the success in academic and social endeavors that you take up in life… And ya the blog was very lucidly written… Keep them coming!!

Hi!
It’s amazing to see you do such wonderful stuff, and it surely inspires me to do something like this as well. Keep it up! I was just wondering what wouldve happened to those 3 out of 8 women who had breast cancer, if it wasn’t for this program.
Good job!
Hope to see more such posts.

Hey there!
Thank you so much for the well wishes! As for your question – those 3 women had different stages of breast cancer which the mammogram had successfully detected that day. Had it not been detected through means of this program, the cancer would have certainly grown and it would progress to one of its later stages from where health would begin to seriously deteriorate and recovery would be tricky to say the least.
Hope that answers your question. And once again, thanks so much for the support!

How wonderfully refreshing to read and hear about your passion and enthusiasm. It’s a good thing for those women that their cancer was detected, but I do feel for them. I imagine they are confused and worried about what lies ahead. It’s a hard diagnosis to receive.

Hey there! Thank you so much!
Yes, I completely agree with you… Although their cancer was detected, coping with cancer is quite challenging. We can only stay optimistic and hope that scientists soon find a cure. 🙂

there is NO fight, it’s not a war and rejecting any experience can be very damaging, nothing happens without reason and we need to acknowledge that …
